Maduixes de bosc

Maduixeres de bosc fent fruit a la terrasseta. El sol directe va molt bé a la planta, però s'ha d'acompanyar d'aigua abundant. (nom llatí: Fragaria vesca, CZ: lesní jahodníky, ES: frutilla silvestre/fresa salvaje)

Alpine strawberries producing fruit in my small terrasse. Direct sunlight proves beneficial to the plant, but the plants need generous watering.

Estic estudiant com creixen les maduixeres acompanyades de caps blancs. Els caps blancs atrauen pol·linitzadors i depredadors de plagues, però també competeixen amb la maduixera pels nutrients del sòl.

I am studying companion planting compatibility between alpines and sweet allyssum. Sweet allyssum attracts pollinators and other goodies, but they also compete with them for the soil nutrients.

Morritort sobre teclat

Havia sentit de gent fent aquest experiment tan freak i jo no podia ser menys i no intentar-ho: morritort (llatí: Lepidium sativum, txec: řeřicha, espanyol: mastuerzo) creixent sobre un teclat. 

I had heard about this experiment and I couldn't resist giving it a try: garden cress growing on a keyboard.

Larva de crisopa

He vist una larva de crisopa. A simple vista sembla una cotxinilla, però és una larva de crisopa recoberta amb restes de preses i altres materials que fa servir per camuflar-se. Aquestes larves devoren tot tipus d'insectes herbívors indesitjables.

I have seen an aphid lion. At first sight it looks like a mealy bug, but it is an aphid lion covered with remnants of prey and other materials that it uses to hide itself. These larvae feast on many kinds of pests.

Pastanagues Pariser Markt en floració

Això són plantes de pastanaga de la varietat Pariser Markt, que fa unes pastanagues rodones. Les he deixat florir per collir-ne llavor.
These are carrot plants of the variety Pariser Markt, which yields round shaped carrots. I have allowed them to bolt in order to collect seed from them.

Apart de produir llavor, he vist que les umbel·les atrauen una gran varietat d'insectes, un altre punt positiu perquè les umbel·líferes com la pastanaga, anet o julivert en floració atrauen molts insectes, especialment depredadors beneficiosos.
Apart from producing seed, I have seen that its umbels attract a great diversity of bugs, a positive aspect, since umbelliferae like carrot, dill or parsley in bloom attract many beneficial bugs.

Vespa icneumònida

Les vespes icneumònides ponen ous en erugues hostes i els darrers dies ja he vist algunes d'aquestes vespes a les meves terrassetes.

Ichneumon wasps lay eggs on host caterpillars and these last days I have already seen some of these wasps in my terrasses.

I no van a un mal lloc, aquestes vespes. Ja he començat a observar l'aparició d'erugues en plantes de menta i en alguna estèvia. De moment no estic utilitzant el meu Bacillus thuringiensis per combatre-les, per tant les erugues poden proliferar... Estic veient que si deixo les coses a la natura, aquesta s'autoregula magistralment. Sempre tindré pugons altres plagues, però a concentracions baixes que eviten que causin grans danys. Tremoleu, erugues!

And these wasps don't have selected a bad place, since I have already begun observing some caterpillars popping up in mint and stevia plants. At the moment I am not using my Bacillus thuringiensis to keep the caterpillars at bay, so they populations could explode... I am seeing that if I leave things to nature, it self-regulates masterly. I will always have some herbivor bug or another, but at low concentrations, and thus not causing significant damage to my crops.

Umbel·les de la vida

Això és una umbel·la d'anet, creixent al barri del Clot de Barcelona el juny de 2013.
This is a dill umbel, growing in Barcelona (Catalonia) in june 2013.

Les visiten molts insectes, però parlaré ara de 2 d'ells perquè aquí hi haurà marro.

It is visited by many bugs, but I am going to speak about 2 of them because many things will happen here.

El primer d'ells és el pugó, que ha vingut aquí a xuclar la saba de la planta.

The first of them are aphids, comming here to suck the sap of the plant.

I l'altre són vespetes parasitoides. S'alimenten de pol·len de les flors de l'anet i ovipositen dins dels pugons, acabant matant-los.

And the other one are parasitoid wasps. They feed on pollen from the dill flowers and they oviposit inside the aphids, ending up killing them.

Serà interessant anar observant aquesta umbel·la els propers dies perquè el més probable és que cadascun d'aquests pugons es transformi en una mòmia que donarà lloc cadascuna a una nova vespeta parasitoide.  La vespeta de la foto és probablement un mascle, més petits que les vespetes femelles.

It will be interesting to be observing this umbel during next days, since it is very likely that each one of these aphids will transform into a mummy from which a new parasitoid wasp will emerge. The wasp in the photo is probably a male, smaller than females.
